"And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up His spirit. And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised..." Matt. 27:50-52 (ESV)
The ark of the covenant was kept in the heart of the Temple, the Most Holy Place, which was sectioned off from the people by a beautifully woven curtain (ex. 26:21-33). Only the High Priest was permitted in the Most Holy Place, where he would atone for the sins of the people before God (Ex 36:10).
Jesus' death was atonement for my sin, and to give me eternal life in the presence of God. When He hung on the cross and breathed His last breath, the "curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom." I experience new life and full, eternal access to God because I've been redeemed by the blood of Jesus. No curtain will ever separate me from Him. "For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor hight nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Ephesians 8:38-39 (ESV))
